Nigerian Cleric Wanted in Cameroon Goes Into Hiding After Body Is Found Buried at Church Property

A Nigerian cleric wanted by Cameroonian authorities has reportedly gone into hiding after investigators discovered a mummified body buried beneath a concrete slab at a property linked to his church in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

The cleric, identified as Kedi Samuel Kenechukwu, also known as Ekedi Samuel, is the founder of Mercy of God Ministry.

Cameroonian security authorities are reportedly searching for him over allegations including human trafficking, unlawful detention and kidnapping.

According to Cameroon Tribune, the body was discovered on September 19 at about 9am by officers from the Nkoabang Special Police Station during an investigation involving Kenechukwu.

Investigators reportedly found a white-and-gold coffin buried approximately 1.5 metres underground beneath a concrete slab at the church-linked property in Nkoabang.

The remains were said to be in a mummified condition. The body was reportedly that of a woman, although authorities had yet to establish the identity of the deceased or determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

The discovery reportedly followed damage to parts of the property by residents, which led investigators to uncover the concealed underground area.

Authorities were said to be awaiting approval to conduct additional searches of the property to determine whether other remains could be buried there.

The discovery came about 10 days after security officers searched the same Nkoabang property on September 9.

During that operation, investigators reportedly found five vehicles, several hundred kilogrammes of food, working freezers and approximately 30 rooms.

A pit measuring about two metres deep was also discovered at the location, although its purpose was not immediately established.

The Nkoabang investigation followed an earlier operation at another property associated with Mercy of God Ministry in Ngousso, Yaoundé, on September 6.

During that operation, security personnel reportedly found 20 people — 10 women, eight men and two children aged six and seven — in a basement at the property.

The discoveries at the different locations have prompted Cameroonian security agencies to expand their investigation into properties and activities allegedly connected to the ministry.

Kenechukwu remains at large, with reports indicating that border security authorities have been alerted and Interpol has been involved in efforts to locate him.

Investigations are continuing into the activities at the properties, the allegations against the cleric and the circumstances surrounding the body discovered at the Nkoabang site.
