Nigeria Will Not Take Malawi Lightly, Says Madugu

Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu has said Nigeria will not take Malawi lightly when the two teams meet in their opening Group C match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday.

Despite Malawi making their debut in the tournament, Madugu believes they deserve respect after earning qualification through impressive performances in the qualifiers.

“Malawi may be newcomers, but they are a good team. We respect all our opponents and will not take anything for granted. Every team is here with a purpose, and we remain focused on achieving our goals,” he said.

Nigeria are the defending champions and the most successful team in WAFCON history, with 10 titles.

The Super Falcons are drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia and Egypt.

Madugu said his team is determined to defend its title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Falcons will be aiming for a strong start to their campaign as they pursue another continental crown.
