Nigeria, U.S. Strengthen Security Ties as Ribadu Meets Envoy

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday met with a high-level United States delegation led by the newly appointed Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, to discuss ways of strengthening security cooperation between both countries.

The meeting took place in Abuja during Garcia’s first official visit to Nigeria since assuming office on June 1, 2026.

His trip is part of a broader West African tour that includes visits to Côte d’Ivoire and Mali from July 11 to July 18.

According to Ribadu, the discussions focused on reviewing progress made under the Nigeria-U.S. Joint Working Group and exploring new areas of collaboration on shared security concerns.

He said both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deeper dialogue and stronger cooperation in addressing regional and global security challenges.

In a statement shared on his X account, Ribadu described the meeting as another step in consolidating the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

He noted that both sides assessed ongoing initiatives and expressed readiness to build on existing achievements.

Garcia brings extensive experience to the role, having served for 28 years in the U.S. Navy.

Before joining the State Department, he worked as a senior adviser to the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and also served as staff director for the Defence Intelligence and Overhead Architecture Subcommittee.

His appointment filled a position that had remained vacant for more than a year, following a period in which the office was overseen by acting officials.

The visit underscores the continued efforts of Nigeria and the United States to strengthen diplomatic relations and enhance cooperation on security, intelligence sharing, and regional stability.
