At least 270 Nigerians are expected to arrive in Lagos on Thursday as the first group evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks.

The flight, operated by Air Peace, will depart Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday night and land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport around 5 a.m. Thursday.

The Federal Government is funding the evacuation and has made arrangements to receive the returnees.

On arrival, they will be documented, profiled, and given support before reuniting with their families.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the delay was due to ongoing screening and coordination with South African authorities.

More than 1,000 Nigerians have taken part in the exercise, with more still seeking repatriation.

The operation is being coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency alongside other agencies, as the government continues efforts to assist affected citizens.
