The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day address, saying it focused more on his administration than on the nation.

In his broadcast, President Tinubu highlighted the key reforms and economic milestones achieved by his government over the past 28 months.

But ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi argued that the speech failed to capture the historical significance of the occasion. “The President’s speechwriters did not grasp the importance of this moment,” he said.

Abdullahi added that rather than reflecting on Nigeria’s history, Tinubu’s address resembled a budget speech or an annual performance review. “I was expecting him to frame his points within a historical context, but the President seemed unable to rise above the limitations of his administration,” he said.

The ADC chieftain dismissed the achievements mentioned by the President as superficial and largely propagandistic, noting that “most of what the President said about the economy does not reflect the reality Nigerians face.”

He also expressed disappointment that the President only briefly touched on insecurity, despite Nigerians living in daily fear.

“For me, it’s a big disappointment that the President did not grasp the historical significance of this moment and instead used it to highlight his government’s performance,” Abdullahi said.

He concluded that Tinubu spoke more as a party leader than a national one, and that the speech “failed to honour our past or inspire our future.”
