Natasha Seeks Trauma Support for Rescued Oyo Pupils, Teachers

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called on the Federal and state governments to provide psychological support, trauma counselling, and rehabilitation for pupils and teachers rescued from captivity in Oyo State.

Speaking during Senate plenary on Tuesday, the Kogi Central lawmaker said the victims need more than physical freedom and should receive proper mental and emotional care to help them recover from their ordeal.

The appeal followed the rescue of 39 pupils and six teachers who were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The victims were freed on July 10 after spending more than 50 days in captivity.

Akpoti-Uduaghan praised President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the release of the victims.

She noted that survivors of kidnapping often suffer long-term psychological effects and stressed the importance of professional counselling and rehabilitation to aid their recovery and reintegration into society.

The senator also paid tribute to a teacher who died during the period of captivity, extending her condolences to the bereaved family.

The Senate later adopted a motion commending the President, the military, intelligence agencies, and other security institutions for the successful rescue operation.

Lawmakers also urged the government to intensify efforts against kidnappers, terrorists, and bandits, while improving the welfare, training, and equipment of security personnel and continuing efforts to rescue other Nigerians still in captivity.
