NAFDAC, Police Intensify Crackdown on Sachet Alcohol in Ogun

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has partnered with the Ogun State Police Command to strengthen enforcement against the sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and small PET bottles.

The collaboration is aimed at protecting public health and ensuring compliance with regulations governing alcoholic beverages across the state.

NAFDAC’s Ogun State Coordinator, Office 1, Akinwale Fagoroye, led a delegation to the Police Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where they met with the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni.

Fagoroye said the enforcement exercise, which began in Abeokuta, would be expanded to other parts of Ogun State and continue until full compliance is achieved.

He explained that the operation includes removing from circulation alcoholic drinks packaged in sachets and PET bottles with capacities below 200ml (20cl).

According to him, the measure is intended to reduce the harmful effects associated with easy access to cheap and highly portable alcoholic beverages, particularly among children and young people.

He urged manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to comply with the regulations and cooperate with NAFDAC officials during enforcement operations.

NAFDAC teams are inspecting markets, motor parks, shops, bars, warehouses, factories and other locations where regulated products are manufactured, stored or sold.

The agency also has the authority to take action against counterfeit, unregistered, substandard, adulterated, expired or improperly labelled products, as well as facilities operating without the required approvals.

Responding, Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni commended NAFDAC for its efforts to protect public health and pledged the police command’s continued cooperation and security support during lawful enforcement operations.

He said the police were also enforcing the Liquor Act and other relevant laws regulating the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in Ogun State.

Ojajuni urged manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers to comply with the regulations.

He also called on residents to report suspected fake, unsafe or unapproved products and illegal alcohol-related activities to the appropriate authorities.

The Ogun State Police Command said it would continue to support regulatory enforcement efforts aimed at protecting lives, promoting public safety and safeguarding the health and wellbeing of residents.
