Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party in the United States, declaring it a move to challenge what he described as a “one-party system” ruining the country’s democracy.

The billionaire tech mogul and once key donor to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign made the declaration on Saturday via his social media platform, X.

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote.

“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk’s announcement followed a poll he shared on Independence Day, asking users if they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has defined US politics for over 200 years. Over 1.2 million people responded, with twice as many voting “yes” over “no”.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk said on Saturday.

His fallout with Trump deepened in recent weeks over the controversial One Big Beautiful Bill — a sweeping Republican-backed domestic spending plan. Musk, who previously headed the so-called Department of Government Efficiency under Trump, denounced the bill and its GOP supporters, accusing them of promoting “debt slavery.”

Experts warn the legislation will add $3.4 trillion to the US deficit over the next decade.

Following Musk’s fierce opposition, Trump reportedly threatened to deport him and cut off federal funding to his companies.

Asked by reporters if he would consider deportation, Trump responded, “We’ll have to take a look.”
