Malami, who is standing trial alongside his wife and son over alleged money laundering, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of denying him access to his family and legal team following his re-arrest in Abuja.

Malami, who is standing trial alongside his wife and son over alleged money laundering, was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre.

A federal high court in Abuja had granted him N500 million bail on January 7. However, shortly after his release on Monday, DSS operatives reportedly re-arrested him at the prison’s entrance, allegedly over claims that arms were found at his residence.

In a statement on Wednesday, Malami’s media aide, Mohammed Doka, described the reports as “false, unsubstantiated and unsupported by any official record.”

He said neither Malami nor his family or lawyers had been formally informed of any such discovery.

Doka said the continued detention and isolation of Malami by the DSS raised serious concerns about his safety, welfare, and constitutionally guaranteed rights.

“We categorically reject claims that any cache of arms or ammunition was discovered in any residence linked to Abubakar Malami, SAN,” the statement reads.

“No such discovery has been formally communicated to his family or legal representatives. We also firmly deny allegations linking Malami to terrorism or related activities. These claims are speculative and unsupported by verifiable evidence.”

The statement further expressed concern over the hardship and emotional strain placed on Malami’s family and staff due to “sensational reporting and unverified narratives.”

It also noted that Malami is a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and has declared his intention to contest the Kebbi State governorship election in 2027.
