French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “stop lying” regarding his intentions for peace in Ukraine, accusing him of saying one thing while continuing aggressive actions.

Speaking during a visit to Madagascar on April 24, 2025, Macron criticized Putin for claiming to want peace in discussions with US negotiators but then ordering deadly missile attacks on Kyiv.

The recent strike, which killed at least nine people, is one of the deadliest since Russia’s invasion began over three years ago.

Macron stated, “The only thing to do is for President Putin to finally stop lying.”

He further pointed out that Putin told US negotiators “he wants peace” while continuing to “bombard Ukraine.”

He added, “In Ukraine, they only want a single answer: Does President Putin agree to an unconditional ceasefire?”

Macron emphasized that the only way to halt the violence is for Putin to agree to an unconditional ceasefire, which the US and European powers have been urging.

He continued, “If President Putin says yes, the weapons will fall silent tomorrow, lives will be saved.”

He also stressed that US anger should be directed solely at Putin, saying, “US anger should be directed at only one person, President Putin.”

In addition to his criticism of Putin’s actions, Macron dismissed the idea of discussing Crimea’s status at this stage, stating that the immediate priority should be achieving a ceasefire.

He said, “Macron however said he thought the priority should be first agreeing to a ceasefire, and that the status of Crimea was not something to be discussed ‘for now’.”

The issue of Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, could be addressed later, but for now, a halt in fighting is the most critical step.
