Macron Calls Emergency Cabinet Meeting as Wildfire Nears Bordeaux

French President Emmanuel Macron has convened an emergency cabinet meeting to coordinate efforts against massive wildfires threatening the southwest of the country, as firefighters work to stop the flames from reaching the historic city of Bordeaux.

Authorities in the Gironde region said the situation remains largely stable, but concerns are growing as another heatwave is expected later this week.

The wildfire has already burned large areas of forest, forcing evacuations and disrupting communities.

Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave said the blaze remains dangerously close to the metropolitan area.

At its nearest point, the fire was about 15 kilometres from Bordeaux, a city with a population of around 850,000 people.

Local officials described the wildfire as one of the largest ever recorded in the region.

The crisis is part of a broader wave of wildfires across Europe, driven by extreme temperatures and prolonged dry conditions. Scientists have warned that repeated heatwaves are increasing the risk of severe fires across the continent.

Spain is also battling major wildfires, with more than 75,000 people evacuated from affected areas.

Some of the worst blazes have approached Madrid, though regional authorities say their advance has slowed.

Residents who fled their homes described scenes of thick smoke, ash-covered landscapes and widespread destruction.

Officials in both France and Spain continue to monitor the situation closely as emergency crews work to contain the fires and protect communities from further damage.
