A tragic road accident occurred in Lagos, claiming the life of a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officer and leaving a minibus driver injured.
The incident took place at Ketu Bus Stop on Monday at midnight when a commercial minibus, known as “korope,” collided with a stationary LAWMA compactor truck.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident in a statement.
Distress alerts were received at 23:59 hours, prompting emergency responders to activate a swift response.
Upon arrival at the scene by 00:07 hours, the LASEMA Tiger Response Team found the yellow minibus, registration number AGL 97 YK, had crashed into the stationary LAWMA truck.
Preliminary investigations suggested that reckless driving by the minibus driver and the absence of a proper caution sign from the parked truck contributed to the incident.
“In the process of the accident, the minibus struck a LAWMA official who was carrying out his lawful duties. Unfortunately, the LAWMA officer succumbed to his injuries before emergency responders arrived,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
The collision resulted in the LAWMA officer being struck while performing his duties.
His remains were handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for further processing.
Meanwhile, Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the minibus driver “sustained significant injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Agency’s Pre-Hospital Care Unit.”
