Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied Russia’s assertion that Ukraine attacked Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Monday that the alleged attack targeted Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia using 91 long-range strike drones.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that air defense systems intercepted the drones and that no injuries were reported.
Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said the alleged strike occurred on Sunday, “practically immediately after” talks in Florida between U.S. President Donald Trump and Zelenskyy regarding efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy promptly denied Moscow’s claim, accusing Russia of trying to sabotage the peace talks.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also condemned the allegation, saying it was designed to undermine the negotiations. In a post on X, Sybiha wrote that the claim was intended “to create a pretext and false justification for Russia’s further attacks against Ukraine, as well as to undermine and impede the peace process.”
Russia announced it would reconsider its negotiating stance in response to the alleged attack, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warning that Moscow’s reaction “would not be diplomatic.”
Later on Monday, Trump said that during a phone call, Putin told him that Ukraine had attempted to target the Russian president’s residence. Speaking to reporters, Trump confirmed that Putin raised the allegation during their conversation.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported that 89 combat incidents had been recorded along the front line since the start of the day. Fighting continued in six sectors, with Russian forces focusing their main efforts on the Pokrovsk sector, according to an operational update published by Ukrinform on Monday.
