The Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, as a public holiday to honor the memory of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday evening in London at the age of 81.
This was confirmed in an official statement issued by Abdullahi Garba Faskari, Secretary to the State Government. According to him, the work-free day will provide an opportunity for residents and public workers across the state to reflect, mourn, and offer prayers for the late elder statesman.
Governor Radda Pays Tribute
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina, and the nation at large. In a tribute issued shortly after the announcement, he described Buhari as:
“A visionary leader, a patriotic statesman, and a true democrat whose life was devoted to the unity and development of Nigeria.”
He also offered Islamic prayers, asking Almighty Allah (SWT) to grant President Buhari eternal rest, forgive his shortcomings, and admit him into Aljannatul Firdaus.
National Mourning and Official Reactions
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement from the State House, confirmed Buhari’s passing and described him as:
“A patriot, a soldier, and a statesman. Buhari’s leadership left a lasting impact on Nigeria both as a military ruler and as a two-term democratically elected president.”
Tinubu disclosed that he had spoken directly with Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late president, to convey his personal condolences. He further ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to the United Kingdom to coordinate the repatriation of Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
State Funeral and National Flag Directive
In honour of Buhari’s legacy, the President directed that national flags across the country fly at half-mast for seven days, beginning Sunday. He also announced that a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session will be held Tuesday, July 15, in memory of the late former leader.
President Tinubu affirmed that the Federal Government will accord full state burial honours to Muhammadu Buhari, a man who once led Nigeria as military Head of State (1983–1985) and later as civilian President (2015–2023).
