Former Kogi West Senator and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the party, citing its inability to provide the political leadership Nigerians urgently need.
In a resignation letter addressed to the PDP Chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State and made public via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday Melaye declared his withdrawal from the party at all levels.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at all levels of involvement,” the former lawmaker wrote, attributing his departure to the party’s waning capacity to address Nigeria’s deep-rooted political issues.
According to Melaye, the PDP has lost the strength and moral compass needed to lead the country out of what he described as a “political cankerworm” that has plagued the nation’s governance system.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation,” he stated.
Melaye, who previously ran for the Kogi State governorship under the PDP, added that his conscience could no longer allow him to support or participate in a system he believes is no longer aligned with the nation’s best interests.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda,” he noted. “Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect.”
Despite his resignation, Melaye expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP’s platform, acknowledging the roles and responsibilities he held during his time in the party.
His departure marks yet another major defection from Nigeria’s main opposition party amid growing dissatisfaction with its internal operations and perceived lack of direction.
Just weeks ago, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also tendered his resignation from the PDP. In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the party’s leadership at his Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State and shared by media personality Dele Momodu, Atiku described the decision as painful but necessary.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” Atiku stated. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Both Melaye and Atiku are now part of a new political alignment under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is positioning itself as a more credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections. The coalition includes other high-profile political figures such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, ex-Senate President David Mark, former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola.
As 2027 approaches, Nigeria’s political landscape continues to shift, with new alliances being forged in a bid to challenge the status quo and offer a fresh direction for the country.
