Nigeria – Kogi: Twelve inmates have escaped from the Federal Correctional Centre in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in a jailbreak that occurred without any visible structural damage to the facility.
Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, described the incident as “unfortunate” on Monday, confirming that security agencies had already re-arrested one of the escapees.
Fanwo suggested the escape may have been an inside job, as the inmates reportedly fled through the prison tower without damaging any structure.
“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns.
“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system,” he stated.
Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to tighten measures and prevent further breaches.
He also urged the public to report any suspicious individuals, warning that anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate would be held accountable.
“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo assured.
