Japan has granted Nigeria a $30 million funding boost to establish start-up hubs in Abuja.

The grant, provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), aims to foster innovation and support emerging enterprises in Nigeria’s digital economy.

The project consists of two components: a $9.9 million investment in a state-of-the-art Start-Up Hub led by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and a $21 million initiative by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) to create a supportive environment for social start-ups.

The Start-Up Hub will feature advanced digital technologies and collaborative workspaces, fostering innovation and job creation.

The project is part of Japan’s continued commitment to Africa’s sustainable development.

Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, and Mr. Yuzurio Susumu, Chief Representative of JICA Nigeria Office, signed the agreement.

Bagudu highlighted the initiative as a milestone in Nigeria-Japan relations and a step towards economic growth and youth empowerment, stating, “This project marks a significant milestone in Nigeria-Japan bilateral relations. It reflects our shared vision for innovation-driven economic growth and youth empowerment.”

NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, emphasized the ongoing collaboration with JICA, noting that their iHatch initiative has already created hundreds of jobs and supported Nigerian startups.

“We are now expanding this initiative across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” Inuwa said.

“Through a six-month incubation program, iHatch equips startups with the tools and mentorship they need to launch market-ready products, leveraging JICA’s global expertise.”

The Abuja Start-Up Hub is expected to become a key driver of digital innovation in West Africa.

The project will run until December 2030, with phased disbursements and progress reports provided by JICA throughout the implementation period.
