The number of people killed in the powerful earthquake that struck southwestern Japan has risen to 34, authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture have confirmed.
Officials said six people remain seriously injured following the magnitude 7.1 quake, which struck near the city of Uki on Tuesday and caused widespread damage across the region.
The earthquake left about 40,000 homes without electricity, disrupted rail services, and triggered tsunami warnings in parts of Kyushu.
Authorities said many of the deaths were linked to structural damage at an industrial facility and a suspected gas explosion at a shopping complex.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
Emergency teams are also working to address water shortages and other challenges facing affected communities.
