Iru Ẹkun Responds to Reported Attack on Farmers in Oke-Eri, Calls for Unity and Stronger Community Security

Security network says injured farmers received medical attention as operatives join local security efforts in Ijebu North East

The Iru Ẹkun Security Network, Ijebu North East Command, has called for greater unity, vigilance and community support following reports of an early-morning attack on farmers in Oke-Eri, Ijebu North East Local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to a statement signed by the Ijebu North East Commandant of the security network, Comrade Eniola Mathew Olusoga, a distress call was received at approximately 5:00 a.m. concerning an alleged attack on farmers in the Oke-Eri community.

The statement alleged that the farmers were attacked by suspected herders, leaving some people injured. The affected victims were reportedly taken to medical facilities, including the State Hospital, for urgent treatment.

Following the distress call, the Iru Ẹkun Security Network said its Ijebu North East Command mobilised personnel to Oke-Eri to assess the situation, engage community stakeholders and provide support within the scope of its community-security activities.

The team subsequently met with the traditional ruler of Oke-Eri and expressed appreciation for the reception and concern shown for the safety and welfare of residents.

According to the statement, Iru Ẹkun representatives also held discussions with an Amotekun official, who reportedly informed the team that security personnel had been responding to developments in the area for approximately three days.

Following consultations with community and security stakeholders, members of the network proceeded to the affected area to assess the situation and obtain a clearer understanding of the reported incident.

Reacting to the development, the Ijebu North East Command stressed that protecting communities cannot be left solely to one organisation or security agency.

It therefore appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, farmers, business owners and residents across Ijebu North East to support lawful community-security initiatives and cooperate with recognised security authorities.

The command said logistical resources such as communication equipment, transportation and other operational tools would improve its ability to respond promptly to distress calls from communities.

It emphasised that its intention is to cooperate peacefully with traditional institutions and established security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army and Amotekun, in efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.

The command also appealed to residents not to take the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of reporting suspicious activities, movements or potential threats to the appropriate security authorities.

It maintained that communities must collectively discourage kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminal activity while ensuring that security responses remain within the law.

The Ijebu North East Command further acknowledged Iru Ẹkun commandants from six other Local Government Areas who reportedly joined the response efforts, describing their participation as a demonstration of solidarity and cooperation.

Reaffirming the organisation’s stated mission in Ijebuland, the command said its activities are intended to support community protection through peaceful and lawful engagement rather than intimidation or oppression.

The statement concluded with an appeal for greater cooperation and resources to strengthen community-security efforts and provide farmers and families with greater peace of mind.

“Together, we can build a safer Ijebuland. Together, we can protect our communities. Together, we can give our farmers and families peace of mind,” the statement read.

The command also expressed appreciation to traditional rulers and other stakeholders supporting efforts to maintain peace and security across Ijebu North East, Ijebuland and Ogun State.
