A prominent Sunni cleric, Molavi Mohammad Anvar Rigi, was shot dead on Monday by unidentified gunmen in the southeastern Iranian border town of Mirjaveh, according to Iranian state media.

Rigi served as the Sunni Friday prayer leader in the region, which is located in Sistan-Baluchistan Province.

The province, one of Iran’s poorest areas, has a large Sunni Baluch population and has witnessed years of unrest involving Islamist and ethnic militant groups, as well as clashes with security forces and individuals linked to the government.

Local authorities said an investigation has been launched to identify those responsible for the killing.

Officials urged residents to remain calm, describing the attack as an attempt to undermine security and fuel sectarian tensions in the province.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the killing.
