Iranian Oil Trade Persists Through Malaysia Despite US Restrictions

Iranian oil exports are continuing through a major offshore anchorage area near Malaysia despite renewed US sanctions and efforts to curb Tehran’s oil trade.

The Eastern Outer Port Limits (EOPL), located about 70 kilometres off Malaysia’s coast, remains a key hub for ship-to-ship transfers of sanctioned oil.

Tankers often switch off their tracking systems during these operations to conceal the origin of the cargo before it is shipped to buyers, mainly in China.

Satellite tracking data reviewed by analysts showed numerous Iranian-linked vessels arriving at the EOPL in recent weeks before disappearing from monitoring systems.

Dozens of sanctioned ships were also reportedly operating in the area.

Analysts say that although sanctions have complicated Iran’s oil exports, alternative shipping networks, payment systems and intermediary operators have helped keep crude flowing to international buyers.

The United States continues to target vessels and companies linked to the trade, while China maintains its opposition to unilateral US sanctions.
