Iran has warned Ukraine of possible consequences following a deadly attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea that left one sailor dead and several others injured.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strike, describing it as a violation of international law and stating that the attack “cannot go unanswered”.
He also accused Israel of encouraging actions that could widen regional tensions.
Ukraine said its forces targeted a Russian warship and vessels allegedly involved in transporting Iranian-linked military cargo.
However, Tehran rejected claims that it has been involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and insisted the attack was unjustified.
Iran has summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to protest what it called a hostile act. Senior Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Azizi also warned that attacks against Iran carry consequences, suggesting Kyiv could face retaliation.
The incident adds to growing tensions between Iran and Ukraine.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Kyiv has accused Tehran of supplying drones used by Russian forces, an allegation Iran has repeatedly denied.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed condolences over the sailor’s death and discussed regional security issues with Iranian officials.
