Nigerians trapped in Tehran amid the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel have accused officials at the Nigerian Embassy of abandoning them in their time of need.

In a viral video shared widely on social media, a distressed Nigerian man stood outside the embassy in Tehran, decrying the absence of diplomatic staff despite mounting security threats.

“We came to the Nigerian Embassy here in Tehran in respect to the situation, as it has been informed that all residents should be evacuated. But there’s nobody here. They have all abandoned us,” he said.

The man further alleged that embassy officials, including the Nigerian Ambassador, had fled to a nearby island to secure their own safety, leaving stranded Nigerians to face the crisis alone.

“They have all gone to an island, that is where they are now,” he claimed.

In response to the outrage, the Federal Government on Tuesday announced that it was finalising arrangements to evacuate Nigerians stranded in both Iran and Israel.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by its spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, said efforts were ongoing in collaboration with the Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran to ensure the safe return of affected citizens.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.

Nigerians in the affected areas were advised to adhere strictly to local security guidelines and register with the nearest embassy or consulate for further instructions.

The ministry also commended the dedication of Nigerian diplomatic staff in the two countries and reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of its citizens abroad.
