The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, July 20, 2026, for the Ekiti State governorship election and Saturday, August 8, 2026, for Osun State.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the announcement on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

He explained that the dates were fixed in line with the constitutional requirement which mandates that elections into executive offices must be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent office holders.

Prof. Yakubu stated that the Commission would release the detailed Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the two elections in due course, to enable political parties and stakeholders begin preparations in earnest.

The INEC Chairman also noted that the Commission was finalising arrangements for bye-elections to fill vacant legislative seats in both the National and State Houses of Assembly across the country.

He charged the newly sworn-in RECs to be neutral, firm, and transparent in discharging their duties, adding that the credibility of the electoral process rests heavily on the integrity of those who manage it.
