INEC Announces September 19 Date for By-Elections in Four States

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed Saturday, September 19, 2026, for by-elections to fill five vacant legislative seats across four states.

The affected states are Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta, according to a statement issued by the electoral commission on Friday.

INEC announced the development through its official X handle, stating that the elections would be conducted in designated polling units within the affected constituencies.

Voting is scheduled to commence at 8:30am and close at 2:30pm on election day.

The constituencies where the by-elections will take place are Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

The five legislative seats became vacant following the death, resignation, defection and political movements of their former occupants.
In Gombe State, the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat became vacant following the death of the former lawmaker representing the constituency, Yaya Bauchi Tongo, who died in June 2026.

In Bauchi State, two State House of Assembly seats are to be filled. The Sakwa constituency seat became vacant following the death of its former occupant, while the Disina seat became vacant after the serving lawmaker resigned to pursue a chairmanship position.

In Delta State, the Udu State Constituency seat was declared vacant by the State House of Assembly after its former representative, Collins Egbetamah, defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Meanwhile, the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency seat in Kano became vacant after its former occupant, Rabiu Shuaibu, left the State House of Assembly to contest the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat.

Shuaibu subsequently won the federal constituency by-election conducted in June, defeating candidates of the Allied Peoples Movement and the Labour Party.

With the vacancies arising from these different circumstances, INEC has now scheduled September 19 for voters in the affected constituencies to elect new representatives.

The commission urged eligible voters in the constituencies to participate in the electoral process and exercise their franchise in accordance with the relevant electoral guidelines.

The September 19 by-elections will therefore provide an opportunity for the affected constituencies to regain representation in the National Assembly and respective State Houses of Assembly.
