Hundreds of protesters marched through Houston, Texas, on Sunday, demanding justice for Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican man who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on July 7.
Demonstrators gathered at Ervan Chew Park and marched through the city carrying banners that read “Abolish ICE” and “Justice for Lorenzo.”
The protest comes amid growing criticism of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies and increased scrutiny of ICE operations across the United States.
ICE said Salgado Araujo attempted to ram an agent with his vehicle, leading the officer to fire in self-defence.
However, witnesses have disputed that account, while federal prosecutors made no mention of a collision in their statement on the incident.
The Houston rally followed similar protests in other parts of the country, including Maine, where a Colombian man, Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, was also fatally shot during a traffic stop involving immigration officers.
In response to the controversy, ICE announced that at least one officer will be required to wear a body camera during vehicle stops.
The incidents have intensified the national debate over immigration enforcement and the conduct of federal agents in the United States.
