Several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Jordan, have strongly condemned the abuses committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during their capture of el-Fasher, Sudan.

This condemnation comes as researchers at Yale University revealed satellite imagery showing clusters of objects consistent with human bodies and large areas of red discolouration on the ground, indicating mass killings in the strategic area.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in a brutal civil war with Sudan’s army since 2023, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and over 12 million displaced people.

The paramilitary force captured el-Fasher, the army’s last stronghold in Darfur, on Sunday after a 17, long siege.

The Sudanese government reports at least 2,000 people have been killed in the city since then, while aid agencies have received credible reports of atrocities, including summary executions, attacks on civilians, and house-to-house raids. Sexual violence, particularly against women and girls, has also been reported.

The fall of el-Fasher gives the RSF near-full control of Darfur, raising concerns about another split in Sudan, following South Sudan’s creation over a decade ago.

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hasn’t responded to the allegations against them. This paramilitary group originated from the infamous Janjaweed militia, notorious for committing genocide during the Darfur conflict in the 2000s. The US has declared that the RSF and its allies are committing genocide in the ongoing war.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the fall of el-Fasher as a “terrible escalation” and urged an end to foreign military support for the warring parties. He highlighted that external interference is hindering ceasefire and peace efforts.

Although Guterres didn’t name a specific country, Sudan’s government and human rights groups accuse the United Arab Emirates of supplying the RSF with weapons, exacerbating the conflict .
