Harvard University has sued the Trump administration over threats to withdraw up to $1 billion in research funding if the institution fails to comply with controversial federal demands.

The move comes after the White House ordered the university to audit lecturers for plagiarism, report international students accused of misconduct, and appoint an external overseer to ensure ideological balance in departments.

Harvard President Alan Garber described the demands as an attempt by the government to exert “unprecedented and improper control,” warning of severe and lasting consequences.

Filed in a Massachusetts federal court, the suit accuses the administration of using funding threats to seize control of academic decisions. Other universities facing similar pressure were also referenced.

Named in the lawsuit are key administration figures including Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian.
