ABIA, Nigeria – Unknown gunmen on Friday evening killed two policemen and injured one other following an attack on their checkpoint at the popular Opobo Junction along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Expressway in Abia State, eastern Nigeria.

The police officers were at the junction for their usual evening stop-and-search operation when the gunmen, numbering about six, came in a Toyota Sienna sport utility vehicle, an eyewitness said.

The incident caused chaos in the area, prompting shop owners along the road and traders at Ehere market to close their shops, with some abandoning their wares to seek safety, according to an available report.

However, a few later, several police patrol teams swept into the area as residents fled the road.
