At least eight people, including students, were injured on Tuesday after an armed man opened fire near a high school in Turgutlu district of western Türkiye, authorities said.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning near the İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu, located in Manisa Province.
The Manisa Governor’s Office said it received a report of gunfire in the vicinity of the school at approximately 7:59 a.m. Security forces and emergency responders were subsequently deployed to the area.
Eight people were injured in the shooting and were taken to local hospitals for medical attention.
Authorities did not immediately provide detailed information about the severity of their injuries or identify the victims.
The suspected gunman was arrested shortly after the shooting when he attempted to escape from the area, according to the governor’s office.
“After the incident, the suspect believed to have fired the weapon was caught by security forces and taken into custody,” the governor’s office said in a statement.
Images circulated online appeared to show an armed man walking near the school. Security camera footage released by Turkish media also reportedly showed a man carrying a firearm and running close to the school shortly after the shooting.
Police cordoned off the area as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities said the motive for the shooting remained under investigation.
The latest attack has raised renewed concerns about security around schools in Türkiye, coming only months after two separate school shootings in the country.
In April, 16 people, most of them students, were injured when a former student opened fire at a high school in Şanlıurfa Province.
The attacker later died by suicide.
The following day, another school attack occurred in Kahramanmaraş Province.
A 14-year-old reportedly killed nine people, including students and teachers, and injured 13 others before being killed by police.
Authorities have not indicated that Tuesday’s shooting is connected to either of the previous attacks.
The investigation into the Turgutlu incident is continuing, with security agencies expected to establish how the suspect obtained the weapon, what led to the shooting and whether there were any specific targets.
Further details about the condition of the injured victims and the circumstances surrounding the attack are expected as the investigation progresses.
