At least 15 people sustained injuries in a gas explosion that occurred on Sunday afternoon in Ijora Badia, Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

The explosion, triggered by a 25kg gas cylinder inside a mini shop, happened around 4:10 p.m.

The shop, which contained five similar cylinders, was situated within a bungalow that housed 15 self-contained rooms and seven other shops.

Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Director, Margaret Adeseye, attributed the explosion to the mishandling of gas products, which led to a gas leak that ignited from a nearby flame.

β€œIt was a case of poor handling of gas products, which unfortunately allowed gas to escape and come in contact with a flame. This triggered the explosion,” Adeseye said.

The resulting fire was quickly extinguished, and the remaining gas cylinders were evacuated to prevent further danger.

β€œThe resulting fire was swiftly extinguished, and the remains of the gas cylinders were safely evacuated. The danger was completely averted, and normalcy has since returned to the area,” she added.

Thankfully, no fatalities were reported. However, 15 individuals sustained varying degrees of burns. Several of the injured were treated on-site, while others were transported to nearby hospitals for advanced care.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), swiftly managed the situation.

None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, and normalcy has since returned to the area.
