Former Mexican President’s Son Says U.S. Revoked His Visa

Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, says the United States has revoked his visa, describing the decision as politically motivated.

López Beltrán, popularly known as “Andy,” made the claim in a letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump.

He said U.S. authorities had not provided evidence linking him to any crime or wrongdoing and accused U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau of being behind the decision.

The reported visa cancellation comes as the Trump administration has intensified its campaign against Mexican officials suspected of links to organised crime.

Reuters previously reported that at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials had their U.S. visas revoked as part of Washington’s efforts to combat drug cartels.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she was not aware of any investigation by Mexican authorities involving López Beltrán. She described the U.S. visa cancellations involving politically exposed Mexicans as a matter of Mexican sovereignty and said she viewed the action as interference in Mexico’s internal politics.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico declined to comment, while the State Department had not immediately responded to requests for clarification.

López Beltrán recently stepped down from a leadership position in the ruling Morena party, founded by his father.

The 39-year-old politician is preparing to seek a seat in Mexico’s lower house of Congress in the 2027 elections, potentially representing a district in his home state of Tabasco.

In his letter, López Beltrán urged Trump to review the decision and rejected what he described as attempts to portray foreign politicians as security threats or members of criminal organisations.

The dispute adds to existing tensions between Mexico and the United States over organised crime, migration and political interference, with both governments continuing to navigate their increasingly sensitive bilateral relationship.
