Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been charged with allegedly failing to fully declare assets worth tens of millions of dollars to the country’s anti-corruption authorities.
The 66-year-old former premier appeared before the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Thursday, August 27, 2026, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecutors allege that he failed to provide a complete declaration of his assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Authorities accuse Ismail Sabri of concealing assets valued at approximately $40 million, reportedly held in nine different currencies.
The alleged undeclared wealth also includes bars of gold and silver.
His lawyer, Amer Hamzah Arshad, said the case essentially concerned an alleged failure to comply with an official notice requiring the former prime minister to declare certain assets.
He added that the defence team would examine concerns regarding the legality and propriety of the charge.
The court granted Ismail Sabri bail of 300,000 Malaysian ringgit (about $74,500).
The judge also rejected a request to seize his passport, saying there was insufficient evidence to suggest that the former prime minister posed a flight risk.
Ismail Sabri is expected to return to court on September 29, 2026. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years.
Ismail Sabri served as Malaysia’s prime minister for about 15 months, from August 2021 until November 2022, making his tenure the shortest among the country’s recent prime ministers.
In March, Malaysia’s anti-corruption agency disclosed that Ismail Sabri had submitted an asset declaration after being instructed to do so as part of an investigation into allegations involving corruption and money laundering.
His prosecution makes him the third former Malaysian prime minister in recent years to face criminal proceedings over alleged corruption-related activities.
Former Prime Minister Najib Razak is currently serving a reduced six-year prison sentence following his conviction in connection with the multibillion-dollar scandal involving Malaysia’s 1MDB state investment fund.
He also received an additional 15-year sentence in a separate and larger corruption trial linked to the same scandal and remains involved in other legal proceedings.
Another former prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, is also facing trial on corruption and money-laundering allegations.
The case against Ismail Sabri adds to growing scrutiny of former Malaysian leaders and the government’s continuing efforts to investigate alleged corruption and financial misconduct involving senior political figures.
