The nation is mourning the passing of Colonel Joseph Akaagerger (Rtd), a distinguished military officer, former Military Administrator of Katsina State, and former Senator representing Benue North-East in Nigeria’s National Assembly. His death has been officially confirmed in a statement released by Ibrahim Mohammed, the Chief Press Secretary to Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda.

Colonel Akaagerger, who served as Military Administrator of Katsina State between August 1998 and May 1999, died at the age of 68. During his brief but significant tenure, he played a crucial role in overseeing the state during Nigeria’s delicate transition from military to civilian rule. His time in Katsina left a lasting impact on governance and inter-ethnic relations.

According to the statement from the Governor’s Office, Mallam Radda described the late Colonel as a man of immense character, vision, and commitment to unity, noting that “he built bridges that have withstood the test of time.”

“Today, we mourn not just a former military governor but a true son of both Benue and Katsina, who tied our people together with bonds of unity and mutual respect. Death has taken him, but it cannot erase the goodwill and friendship he left behind,” the governor’s message read.

Born on May 5, 1956, Colonel Akaagerger was a highly respected figure known for his discipline, integrity, and selfless service. After retiring from the military, he returned to his native Benue State, where he was elected Senator for Benue North-East in 2007, underlining the trust his people had in his leadership.

Governor Radda praised the late Colonel for embodying a rare fusion of military precision, legal knowledge, and democratic ideals, adding that his legacy will serve as a guiding light for generations to come.

“Though a son of Benue by birth, Colonel Akaagerger became a son of Katsina through service. His leadership, humility, and dedication to the public good left a mark on our people that will never be forgotten.”

Governor Radda extended heartfelt condolences to Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State, the Akaagerger family, and all who were touched by the late Colonel’s life and career.

“As we bid farewell to this gallant soldier, legal luminary, and noble statesman, we pray that God grants him eternal rest and comforts his loved ones during this difficult time.”

Colonel Joseph Akaagerger’s passing marks the end of a life defined by purpose, discipline, and patriotism. He is remembered not only for the positions he held but for the values he lived by—service, unity, and integrity.

May his soul rest in peace.
