EKITI, Nigeria – The remains of a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Nigeria’s Ekiti State University, Prof. Femi Olaofe, have been found.
This comes barely 20 days after his abduction.

The body was discovered along Airport Road, Ado-Ijan, where it was buried in a shallow grave.

A family source said security agents broke the news to them during a meeting in Ado Ekiti, the state’s capital.

Olaofe was whisked away alongside his gateman from his residence located at the Housing Estate on Afao Road in Ado-Ekiti. This happened in the second week of July.

A family member had told newsmen that the kidnappers had reached out to the family, and demanded N50 million ransom.

Olaofe, a native of Are-Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun local government area of Ekiti, was a Professor of Industrial Chemistry before his recent retirement from the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti.

– Insecurity and violence in Nigeria –

For more than a decade, civilians in Nigeria have faced multiple security threats and risk of atrocities as result of attacks, kidnappings and extortion by various non-state armed groups.

Since the start of 2024 civilians have faced intensified violence across Nigeria, and near-daily attacks by armed groups resulting in kidnappings and other abuses against civilians.

Armed groups and gangs, including so-called “bandits,” have – for many years – perpetrated widespread atrocities, including murder, rape, kidnapping, organized cattle-rustling and plunder. Armed herdsmen are also destroying vast swaths of farmland, prompting many farmers to abandon their land out of fear of attack.
