A trial date has been set by a Finnish court for Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafran activist and advocate for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in connection with allegations of terrorist activity.

Ekpa is scheduled to go on trial in June 2025 after being captured in Finland together with four other people. The case is still pending, and after two weeks, either party may ask for a reevaluation.

The self-proclaimed prime minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, Simon Ekpa, is scheduled to appear in court in June, according to BBC Pidgin. He was quoted by his new attorney, Kaarle Gummerus, who stated that he had received the case’s pre-trial file and was reviewing it in order to prepare a strong defense.

Ekpa was taken into custody on suspicion of terrorist-related offenses, such as financing terrorism and inciting violence. He was charged with public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent, and the Päijät-Häme District Court ordered his confinement in custody after his arrest.

According to reports, the Nigerian government formally filed the required documents for Ekpa’s extradition to the Finnish government in December 2024.

Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa told Channel TV that all the paperwork and legal standards needed for Ekpa’s extradition had been sent to Finland for examination.

“Well, I’m sure he’s cooling off somewhere,” Musa said in reference to the rebel leader’s detention.

“Legal action will be taken accordingly,” he added. I’m relieved that he was taken into custody, but I don’t want to reveal too much. I’m sure the correct actions will be performed because the Federal Government has given the Finnish Government the majority of the necessary data.”
