The Federal Government has dismissed claims by the Turkish authorities that a new terror group is operating in Nigeria.

This follows a warning issued by Turkey that members of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) are active in Nigeria and other countries, allegedly disguising their operations through schools and healthcare services.

Speaking at a dinner in Abuja to mark Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day, the Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, said,“The presence of such an organisation poses a threat to every country in which it operates. Unfortunately, the FETO terrorist organisation still maintains its activities in Nigeria, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.

“We consistently inform our Nigerian friends about the nature and dangers of this organisation, and urge them to remain vigilant and cautious.”

Reacting, the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Maj. Gen. Adamu Laka, told The PUNCH that Nigerians should not panic, insisting there is no new terror group in the country.

“There is no new terrorist group in Nigeria. There’s no need to panic,” he said.

FETO is said to be linked to the late Turkish cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who died in 2024 at the age of 83.

Gulen, once an ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was later accused of masterminding the failed 2016 coup attempt in Turkey. He was convicted in absentia and accused of running a global network of schools and organisations used to undermine the Turkish state.
