The Federal Government of Nigeria notes the recent remarks by US President Donald Trump alleging large-scale killings of Christians in Nigeria and calling for the country’s designation as a ‘Country of Particular Concern

The Federal Government has faulted the decision of United States President Donald Trump to label Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution and killings of Christians.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said the allegations made by the US president were baseless and did not reflect the true situation in the country.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria notes the recent remarks by US President Donald Trump alleging large-scale killings of Christians in Nigeria and calling for the country’s designation as a ‘Country of Particular Concern.’
These claims do not reflect the situation on the ground. Nigerians of all faiths have long lived, worked, and worshipped together peacefully,” the statement read.
The ministry said that while the government recognises global concern for human rights and religious freedom, Trump’s statement was misleading and unsubstantiated.
It further stated that under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria remains committed to combating terrorism, fostering interfaith unity, and protecting citizens’ rights regardless of religion or ethnicity.
According to the statement, Nigeria will continue to work with the United States to enhance understanding of its security efforts and promote peace across the region.
Koikimedia reports that President Trump had on Friday night announced on Truth Social, and later through the White House’s X handle, that Nigeria was now listed as a “Country of Particular Concern.”
He alleged that Christianity was under siege in Nigeria, claiming that thousands of Christians had been killed by radical Islamists.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ but that is the least of it,” Trump wrote.
The US president said that out of 4,476 Christians reportedly killed globally, 3,100 deaths occurred in Nigeria.
Trump directed Congressman Riley Moore, alongside Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to urgently investigate the matter and report back to him.
“The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” Trump added.
