A London court has heard that former British government minister Ann Widdecombe was killed after being struck 21 times on the head with a hammer while eating lunch at her home in southwest England.

Widdecombe, 78, a senior figure in Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, was found dead at her residence on July 9, a day after the attack.

Her death sent shockwaves through British politics and renewed concerns about the safety of public officials.

Prosecutors told the court that a camera inside Widdecombe’s home captured the incident.

According to investigators, the suspect entered the property and asked whether she had any bank cards or identification before launching the attack.

The accused, 28-year-old Joshua Kerry from Rotherham, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court charged with murder.

He was not asked to enter a plea and was later remanded in custody pending a further court appearance in October.

Prosecutors alleged that after the assault, the suspect took Widdecombe’s wallet and left the property.

Authorities have said they believe the former minister was specifically targeted, although the motive remains under investigation, including inquiries into possible terrorism-related offences.

Widdecombe was widely known for her conservative political views and served in former Prime Minister John Major’s government during the 1990s.

After leaving Parliament, she remained a prominent public figure through media appearances and political activism.
