Elon Musk Returns to US Government Role as Pentagon Launches Future Warfare Study

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is set to return to an official advisory role within the United States government after being selected to co-lead a new Pentagon initiative examining the future of warfare and the technologies that could shape military operations in the years ahead.

The initiative, known as Project Meridian, was announced by US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth as part of efforts by the Pentagon to draw on expertise from technology leaders, innovators, academics and policy specialists to assess the changing nature of modern warfare.

Musk will co-lead the project alongside Palmer Luckey, the 34-year-old co-founder of defence technology company Anduril Industries, and Newt Gingrich, the 83-year-old former Republican Speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Speaking at the Quantico military base, Hegseth described Project Meridian as an effort aimed at bringing together some of the country’s most experienced and innovative minds to examine the future of military conflict.

“We are leveraging a unique source of American advantage, one our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders and our technologists,” Hegseth said.

He explained that the project would seek to examine emerging areas of warfare and identify the capabilities that the United States would need to develop or strengthen to maintain its military and technological advantage.

Hegseth said the initiative would “creatively look to the future and identify the domains that we must conquer and capabilities we must master.”

The project is expected to include carefully selected private-sector executives, technology specialists, academics and policy experts drawn from different parts of the innovation and defence communities.

The Pentagon has directed the team to complete its work and submit its findings within 120 days, although further details about the study’s specific areas of focus have not been fully disclosed.

Musk’s involvement marks a return to formal government advisory activities after his previous role in the Trump administration.

The billionaire previously served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, where he became closely associated with efforts to reduce government spending and restructure federal operations. He left the position in May 2025.

Musk had been a prominent supporter of President Donald Trump and played a significant role in supporting his return to the White House. However, the relationship between the two men later became strained, with the pair engaging in a highly publicised disagreement over Trump’s spending legislation.

Despite the dispute, Musk later resumed financial support for Republican political causes, including multimillion-dollar contributions to individual candidates and conservative political organisations.

His appointment to Project Meridian now brings him back into a government-linked role, with his involvement expected to focus primarily on technology, innovation and the future of military capabilities.

The Pentagon’s decision to involve Musk also reflects the increasing importance of advanced technology in national defence, as governments continue to examine the potential impact of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced communications and other emerging technologies on future conflicts.

Project Meridian is expected to provide the US government with recommendations on how it can better utilise technological innovation and expertise from outside traditional military institutions as it prepares for potential changes in the global security environment.

The findings of the project, once completed, are expected to provide guidance to the Pentagon on future military priorities and the capabilities it believes the United States should develop or strengthen.
