Eight people have been killed after a charter aircraft crashed near a remote military radar installation in western Alaska, United States authorities have confirmed.

The civilian-contracted Cessna 441, operated by Anchorage-based air charter company Security Aviation, crashed west of Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport at about 20:15 GMT on Thursday, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Rescue personnel were deployed to the area after the crash.

The Alaskan Command later said rescuers who reached the crash site confirmed that there were no survivors.

The aircraft was carrying eight people, including two pilots and six passengers, according to Clint Johnson, the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region chief.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released as officials are working to notify their families.

The crash occurred in a remote part of western Alaska, an area known for its difficult terrain and challenging operating conditions.

The radar facility near the crash site is used to monitor aircraft operating in Alaskan airspace.

Authorities have not immediately disclosed what the passengers were doing at the military radar site or why the charter aircraft was operating in the area.

Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, weather conditions, flight records and other factors that could have contributed to the crash.

The Alaskan Command said an investigation into the incident was underway, while the National Transportation Safety Board and other aviation authorities are expected to assist in determining the cause of the crash.

Alaskan Command chief Robert Davis described the incident as a devastating loss for the military community and the communities served by those involved.

“These individuals were dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment,” Davis said.

Officials have not yet provided details about the circumstances immediately before the crash.

Further information, including the identities of those killed and the possible cause of the accident, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
