Eight Days After Resignation, Edo Assembly Impeaches Speaker

The Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached its suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, just eight days after he announced his resignation from the position.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency I in the Assembly, resigned as Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2026, following a period of controversy and disagreement within the legislature. After his resignation, Yekini Idaiye, representing Akoko-Edo I, was elected to take over as Speaker.

However, despite Agbebaku’s resignation, the House on Monday formally converted his earlier suspension into an impeachment, maintaining that he should be regarded as having been removed from office rather than having voluntarily resigned.

The new Speaker, Idaiye, said the impeachment notice was signed by 17 members of the Assembly.

He explained that the notice was formally presented by the Majority Leader during a previous plenary session.

According to him, the decision to proceed with the impeachment was based on the fact that Agbebaku’s resignation had not been formally presented and documented by the House following his suspension.

Idaiye stressed that the Assembly’s position was that Agbebaku was impeached and did not resign from office.

The motion seeking the formal impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Sunny Ojiezele, and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, the lawmaker representing Etsako Central Constituency.

Following the impeachment, the new Speaker directed Agbebaku to return all government property in his possession.

He also warned that security agencies could be called upon if the former Speaker failed to comply with the directive.

“This is to let the public know that the Edo State House of Assembly has formally impeached the suspended Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku,” Idaiye said.

He added that the impeached former Speaker was expected to surrender all government property in his possession and warned that security agencies would be engaged if he refused to comply.

The development comes eight days after Agbebaku’s resignation and further deepens the leadership crisis that has recently rocked the Edo State House of Assembly.

With Idaiye now presiding over the legislature, attention is expected to focus on the next steps by the Assembly and Agbebaku following the formal declaration of his impeachment.
