EFCC Has Lost Focus, Chasing Wrong Priorities -Sowore

Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of abandoning its core responsibility by concentrating on what he described as minor offences instead of tackling large-scale corruption.

Sowore made the remarks on his X account while reacting to the invitation of activists Peter Akah and Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, by the anti-graft agency over alleged naira abuse.

The commission had invited the pair for questioning in connection with allegations bordering on the abuse of the Nigerian currency.

Condemning the move, Sowore argued that the EFCC was directing its attention to less important matters while major financial crimes continued unchecked.

He said the agency should be focused on exposing and prosecuting those involved in grand corruption, public asset theft, money laundering, procurement fraud and the diversion of public funds.

According to him, the commission’s current approach risks eroding public confidence in its anti-corruption mandate.

“The EFCC has become a symbol of joblessness and misplaced priorities. The real economic and financial criminals appear to be beyond its reach, while the agency increasingly devotes its energy to pursuing easier targets.

“An institution created to combat corruption should focus relentlessly on grand corruption, public asset theft, money laundering, procurement fraud, and the looting of public resources, not distractions that undermine public confidence in its mission. EFCC is finished,” Sowore wrote.
