The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu, a close associate of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Her arrest was confirmed by her legal team in a statement released on Tuesday, stating that she was apprehended around 5 a.m. shortly after she voluntarily returned to the country from London.
According to her lawyers, Achimugu had already indicated in documents filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja that she would honour an invitation by the EFCC and appear before the anti-graft agency on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, as part of an ongoing investigation.
It would be recalled that Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on the said date to answer questions relating to the allegations against her.
The judge also mandated that she must be physically present before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, for the continuation of proceedings in the case.
Details of the allegations against her are still sketchy, but sources close to the investigation say they are linked to high-level financial transactions currently under scrutiny by the EFCC.
Achimugu’s name reportedly surfaced in a wider probe involving influential political and business figures said to have benefited from suspicious contracts and financial dealings.
As of press time, neither Governor Sanwo-Olu nor his media team has issued any official statement on her arrest.
