Operatives of the Nigerian Police Force on Tuesday allegedly fired tear gas at protesters who stormed the National Assembly of Nigeria, demanding that real-time electronic transmission of election results be made mandatory in the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.
The demonstrators had returned to the National Assembly complex after a five-day break, having earlier suspended their protest following assurances given during last Tuesday’s plenary.
The protesters insisted that the inclusion of real-time electronic transmission of results was critical to ensuring credible and transparent elections.
It would be recalled that the Senate reconvened for an emergency plenary session last Tuesday to revisit its controversial decision on Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill after widespread public outcry.
During the session, Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, moved a motion seeking to remove the phrase “real-time” from the clause and replace the word “transmission” with “transfer”.
The proposed changes drew sharp criticism from civil society groups and electoral reform advocates, who argued that the amendment could weaken transparency in the electoral process.
