D’Tigers Begin World Cup Qualifiers With Disappointing Defeat to Cameroon

Nigeria’s D’Tigers endured a difficult start to the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers, suffering a 78–62 defeat to Cameroon on Thursday at the Salle Multidisciplinaire de Radès in Radès, Tunisia.

The result leaves Nigeria with plenty of work to do as they continue their campaign for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

D’Tigers appeared confident at the beginning of the game and quickly established a 6–2 advantage after putting together an early 6–0 scoring run.

Ike Nwamu contributed four points during the spell, while Josh Okogie added two points from the free-throw line and also grabbed a rebound.

However, Nigeria struggled to maintain their early momentum.

Cameroon gradually settled into the contest and levelled the score at 11–11 before taking control of the opening quarter.

A crucial 13–0 run by Cameroon between 4:53 and 2:29 of the first quarter changed the direction of the game. The hosts moved from an 11–7 lead to 20–11, putting Nigeria under significant pressure.

Cameroon eventually ended the opening period with a 23–14 advantage.

Nigeria improved in the second quarter and managed to match Cameroon point-for-point, with both teams scoring 18 points.

Despite the improved performance, D’Tigers were unable to reduce the overall deficit significantly, allowing Cameroon to take a 41–32 lead into halftime.

Cameroon continued to dictate the pace after the break, winning the third quarter 19–16.

Nigeria again struggled to find the consistency needed to close the gap, while Cameroon remained composed and efficient at both ends of the court.

The fourth quarter followed a similar pattern, with Cameroon winning it 18–14 to seal a comfortable 16-point victory.

Yves Missi was the outstanding performer for Cameroon, finishing the game with 24 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

He also shot an impressive nine-of-13 from the field and converted six of his eight free-throw attempts.

Missi’s athleticism and ability to finish around the basket proved particularly important for Cameroon.

His powerful dunk midway through the second quarter increased Cameroon’s lead to 27–17, while another emphatic dunk in the final period helped the team maintain its 65–50 advantage.

Nigeria struggled to respond effectively whenever Cameroon extended its lead, and the Central Africans were able to protect their advantage throughout the remainder of the contest.

The defeat is a setback for D’Tigers, who are currently fourth in Group E with 11 points. Cameroon and South Sudan occupy the leading automatic qualification positions, increasing the importance of Nigeria’s remaining fixtures.

D’Tigers have little time to recover, with South Sudan awaiting them in their second game on Friday. Nigeria will need a significantly improved performance, particularly in terms of defensive organisation, shooting efficiency and maintaining momentum across all four quarters.

The team’s immediate objective will be to bounce back against South Sudan and keep its hopes of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup alive.

Beyond World Cup qualification, a strong performance in the African qualifiers could also improve Nigeria’s prospects of securing a place in the FIBA pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.

With several crucial games still to come, D’Tigers will be hoping Thursday’s defeat serves as a wake-up call as they fight to remain in contention for international basketball’s biggest tournament.
