The arrests followed widespread outrage over videos that circulated on social media on Thursday, showing men ripping the clothes of young women and groping them

Delta Police have arrested Omorede Sunday, the community head of Oruamudhu, and four other suspects over the reported sexual assault of young women during a festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area.

The arrests followed widespread outrage over videos that circulated on social media on Thursday, showing men ripping the clothes of young women and groping them.

In one clip, a young woman was seen crying and clutching her torn clothing as some youths violently assaulted her.

Reports stated that women were expected to remain indoors from 12pm on Thursday until the next day due to the festival.

Some social media users alleged that youths in the community turned the event into a “rape festival” because women were barred from participating.

Koikimedia also sighted screenshots from a WhatsApp group for students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, warning female students not to step outside during the festival period.

The videos sparked outrage online, with many Nigerians demanding justice and the arrest of the perpetrators.

In a statement on Friday, Bright Edafe, Delta Police spokesperson, confirmed that Omorede Sunday, identified as the festival’s chief organiser, had been arrested along with four others.

Edafe added that the Commissioner of Police had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“The CP vows that anyone involved will be arrested and brought to justice,” he said.
