Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the community on motorcycles and opened fire on unsuspecting residents, killing one person on the spot while several others sustained injuries

Three persons have been confirmed dead following a late Monday night attack on Garga community in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State, as residents decried rising insecurity in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen stormed the community on motorcycles and opened fire on unsuspecting residents, killing one person on the spot while several others sustained injuries.
Cattle were reportedly rustled during the attack.
Residents said the assailants shot sporadically, creating panic across the community, while local vigilantes and hunters mobilised in an attempt to pursue them, but not before considerable damage had been done.
The incident has intensified fears among residents, who called for increased security presence to forestall further violence.
Meanwhile, residents also raised concerns over the alleged presence of bandits in neighbouring Birbiyang town, located less than 15 kilometres from Garga district.
In a widely circulated WhatsApp message, the residents urged the government to act swiftly to prevent further loss of lives.
The message alleged that armed men were operating freely in Birbiyang, a federal ward under Kantana area, without security intervention, leaving locals exposed.
It added that the closeness of Birbiyang to Garga reflects a disturbing pattern of repeated attacks on neighbouring communities, describing the development as painful and unacceptable.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, said the authorities were still working to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
βWeβre still making efforts to get to the root of the matter. After that, we will get back to the public,β he said.
