Daddy Showkey Celebrates 50 Years in Entertainment, Reflects on Journey from Ajegunle to Stardom

Veteran Nigerian entertainer Daddy Showkey is set to celebrate 50 years on stage with a golden jubilee concert scheduled for August 9, 2026, at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

The Galala music pioneer said the venue holds special significance in his career, recalling that he performed an acrobatic display during the hotel’s opening ceremony in 1977 and later entertained guests at several events held there.

Speaking during a visit to Vanguard’s headquarters in Lagos, Showkey described his life story as one of perseverance, talent and divine grace.

He said he began his entertainment journey as a child in 1976, performing acrobatics and appearing on television before becoming one of Nigeria’s most influential music stars.

The singer credited his mother for supporting his dreams despite criticism from people who felt he should focus solely on formal education.

He revealed that she will serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the anniversary concert and will watch him perform live on stage for the first time.

Reflecting on the growth of Nigerian music, Showkey praised younger artists for taking Nigerian sounds to global audiences and expressed pride in the industry’s achievements.

The entertainer also spoke about his deep connection to Ajegunle, saying he dedicated part of his career to changing negative perceptions about the community.

He recalled facing discrimination because of his Ajegunle address and vowed to help people become proud of their roots regardless of their background.

The anniversary concert will feature performances by top Nigerian artists, including 2Baba, African China, 9ice, Oritse Femi, Saheed Osupa, Tony Tetuila, Korede Bello, Iyanya and Pasuma, among others, as the veteran entertainer marks five decades in the spotlight.
