Customs Seize N59m Worth of Expired Drugs, Hand Them Over to NAFDAC

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Port Harcourt Area I Command, has handed over a consignment of expired pharmaceutical products worth more than N59 million to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The handover took place at the Command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, with representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Department of State Services (DSS), other security agencies and industry stakeholders in attendance.

Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Salamatu Atuluku, said the expired medicines were intercepted during a joint cargo inspection carried out by Customs, NAFDAC and other government agencies.

She warned that allowing the drugs into the market could have posed serious health risks to Nigerians and reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to preventing the importation of expired, substandard and prohibited products.

Receiving the seized items, NAFDAC officials commended Customs for the interception and assured that the expired medicines would be processed and destroyed in line with regulatory guidelines.

The handover reflects the continued collaboration between Customs and NAFDAC to prevent unsafe pharmaceutical products from entering Nigeria’s supply chain and to safeguard public health.
